Q: Why isn't snow plowed towards the center island of a cul-de-sac?

Category: Winter Maintenance
A: The rear wheels of a vehicle off-track when turning. Snow plowed towards the turning direction of a vehicle will deposit the windrow directly into the rear wheels. The rear wheels track over the windrow of snow, lose traction and spread the snow back onto the plowed roadway. Unlike other roads, plowing cul-de-sacs is cumbersome and time consuming and will often have parked cars, which adversely effects snow removal efficiency. Snow plowed to the outer edge of the cul-de-sac is far more efficient.
